Biography

Judge Susan Barclay was elected to the 117th Judicial District Court on November 8, 2022, and took office on January 1, 2023. Judge Barclay formerly served from August 2017 until her election to the 117th Judicial District Court, as Presiding Judge of the Title IV-D Court in Nueces County, with jurisdiction in Brooks, Duval and Kleberg Counties. Prior to taking the bench in 2017, Judge Barclay was in private practice, beginning in 2004 as an Associate Attorney with Corpus Christi law firms. She opened her own law office in late 2010, where she practiced in the areas of civil, criminal, family and appellate law. Before attending law school at St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas, Judge Barclay worked as a Registered Nurse for 16 years in cardiac surgery and critical care.

Description of Office

District courts generally have the following jurisdiction:

  • Original jurisdiction in all criminal cases of the grade of felony and misdemeanors involving official misconduct
  • Cases of divorce
  • Suits for title to land or enforcement of liens on land
  • Contested elections
  • Suits for slander or defamation
  • Suits on behalf of the State for penalties, forfeitures and escheat
